Compulsory education ends at the age of 16. However, many children will want to continue their education experience by studying for A-Levels, an NVQ, or beyond that a degree.
Many children who want to stay on in education will have an idea of what they want to study, however, if they require help or advice, sit down and discuss their options with them or recommend they speak with their teacher or a Connexions adviser.
What are the options?
There are many learning opportunities available, even if your child is not suited to pure academic learning. Choices include:
- AS / A-Levels in 6th Form or Further Education Colleges
- BTEC
- City and Guilds
- NVQs
- Work Based Apprenticeships
In Slough, most secondary schools have 6th Forms offering a wide variety of subjects at post 16. However, East Berkshire College also offers a diverse range of subjects and courses which may be suitable.
More information on availability and the application process is available via school or college websites and prospectuses.
Education Maintenance Allowance
The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is there to help with some of the costs of further education, and to help your child carry on learning.
If your household income is less than £30,810 then your child can get help with £10, £20 or £30 a week to put towards costs on books, travel or equipment.
This money will be paid straight into your child's bank account. To get their EMA payments, they will need to open an account if they haven't got one already.
To apply for EMA, call 0800 121 8989 or pick up a form from your child's school or college.
Higher Education
Degrees are higher education qualifications that develop a thorough understanding of a subject. They are often seen as a booster to career and earning prospects but are also a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop, grow and learn more about life and independence.
Degree courses generally last 3 years with an option to progress beyond that to a Masters degree or a doctorate!
To assist with the cost of university education, students can take out loans. These are loans where repayments commence only when the receiver earns in excess of £15,000. In most cases these payments are taken automatically via the tax system.
Students wishing to attend university following successful completion of A-Levels or equivalent can get free advice on the application process from teachers, college advisers or Connexions.
